Ferguson, 34, Borough Administrator of Spring Lake, NJ, died Thursday, June 14 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Westchester County, NY, Tom graduated summa cum laude from Pace University, Dyson College Honors Program, with a BA in Political Science. He earned a Masters degree in Public Administration from SUNY University at Albany, where he met his wife Julie (nee Kulesa). Tom received many academic honors and was inducted into several honor societies throughout his higher education. Tom’s short but accomplished career was fueled by his love of municipal government management. Tom held internships in NY with the Villages of Croton and Pleasantville, the counties of Westchester and Schenectady, and the City of Albany. Upon graduation from SUNY Albany, Tom was employed by the Village of Briarcliff Manor, NY, where he was promoted to Manager. In 2001, Tom became the Borough Administrator in Spring Lake, NJ. While in that position, Tom became a NJ Registered Municipal Clerk and a Credentialed City Manager through the International City/County Management Association (ICMA). Under the direction of the Council, Tom secured ICMA and “Tree City” designations for the Borough, and he brought numerous community and capital projects to successful completion. Tom’s years working in Spring Lake were the most personally and professionally fulfilling of his life. Spring Lake, his wife, son, and the Yankees were his passions.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 9 ½ years, Julie, and his adored three year-old son, Andrew. He is also survived by immediate family and friends in Westchester County and Syracuse, NY; and his large extended family—the superb borough staff, the Council and community volunteers and leaders of Spring Lake.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 18, 2007 at 11 AM at St. Catharine’s Church, 215 Essex Ave., Spring Lake. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made to the “Run for Tom” fund, www.runfortom.com. Letters of condolence commemorating Tom’s life are gratefully received for presentation to his son, c/o Chief Dawson, SLPD, 311 Washington Ave., Spring Lake, NJ 07762.
